What to do when AI can run through this stuff in an instant? Where does that leave humans and their slow-working brains? Actually, it took a few seconds to come up with that response. But despite the impressive speed and variety of interesting points, there’s no real meat in those oysters. There’s no gold to work in that ore. Only an indication of where a person might dig. The digging has to be done by humans, with or without more AI help.

Continuing to use AI for something like this, from my experience, keeps a person on the surface of the ground and delays – or even prevents – the real digging, the real work. So let’s strike spade into soil. I’ll take a bit of the AI’s response and try to dig out some gold (by “gold” I mean ideas or insights that might be worked into a deeper and more rewarding exploration).

Here’s a quote from the AI output:

“Function: Oracular Output

Sibyl: Offers cryptic, often poetic prophecies from the gods.

Text-generative AI: Produces text in response to prompts—sometimes poetic, often surprising.

Overlap: Both are responders to human queries, accessed in search of insight, truth, or guidance.”

Exploring this calls for a context, and there are many to choose from. A most general one that I use often – I keep it on the shelf directly above my workbench, I use it so much – is not-mind. Both the Sybil and AI (short for “text-generative AI”) create language. Language immediately traps a human in language. And more language builds the walls of the trap higher, wider, stronger.

The Sybil’s language tries to escape this paradox by creating language in a way that attempts to avoid full immersion in language, or tries to stay partly outside of language, or at the very least acknowledges the not-mind source of language and the paradox of language arising from something so utterly different than itself. The Sybil writes her prophecies on leaves and scatters them in the wind. She burns her books. Her language is in the world, in the material of the world – trees, smoke, air ….

Put poetically, the Sybil’s language bleeds out into not-mind, into reality outside of language. It’s wounded. The Sybil speaks a wounded language.

AI language is complete and whole and limited to language-as-positivity. The AI’s language has no awareness of or connection to the negative, to not-language, not-mind, to the emptiness outside of language and mind, and from which language and mind arise. AI language is a complete trap: floor, walls, ceiling, with no conception at all of any “outside”.

Some takeaways

It’s possible to only use AI, but the loss is depth, clarity, human-ness, and references to reality. Here’s some of what’s missing:

Creativity, the unexpected, the unconsidered.

The “outside”, the world outside of the AI’s training data, but also outside of the AI’s usage of the training data. For example, I only mentioned the Sybil and AI, so the AI didn’t explore more broadly to consider other prophets, other cultures, other contexts of the prompt and its contents, which a human would very readily do. That’s to say, humans will “discuss” more readily than they’ll simply produce a sort of encyclopedic answer to your prompt. This discussion leads to exploration of broader, possibly deeper contexts of the question and the asking of the question. Here’s an example:

A human’s response to the prompts that I put in the AI: “Why are you comparing these two things? What’s your desire? Whatever it is, you’ll sooner or later have to bring yourself to the answer of this desire; in other words, whatever you find in answer to your question, it won’t satisfy you unless you relate it to your own life, especially to specific details of your life that you care more deeply about.”

Most people, I think, will use AI in the shallow-mediocre way. What’s a good term for this usage of AI, in which the superficial AI response is taken as a full exploration of a topic. And conversely, what’s a good term a fully human way of exploring a topic or a question? I think the shallow way will become the norm not because people can’t do better, but because of inertia:

Psychological inertia: it’s more effort (unless a person derives pleasure from it)

Institutional: No resources invested in the effort. No money budgeted for the people, their training, or the time it takes to do a better job.

what else? what am i missing? I could put all of this into ChatGPT and ask it what i’m missing, but that feels like climbing back into a trap that i just managed to escape

On the other hand, this whole discussion only happened because ChatGPT was available …

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[30

post-1095","fw-portfolio","type-fw-portfolio","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","fw-portfolio-category-ideas

Idea: AI =!= Sybil at Cumae?
